The 'Ndocciata of Agnone: the enchantment of Fire and Tradition

In the heart of the Molise hills, Agnone reveals one of Italy’s most impressive fire shows: the ‘Ndocciata.

An ancient tradition dating back to Samnite times, now recognized as a heritage of Italy for its authenticity and historical roots. The event, initially linked to the celebration of Christmas Eve, has recently found its way to the feast of the Immaculate Conception as well. In 2022, the City of Agnone and the associations involved in the organization made the decision to move the traditional Dec. 8 event to the second Saturday of the month, thus involving tourists and locals in a broader celebration.

Agnone’s contrade, such as Colle Sente, Capammonde and Capabballe, Sant’Onofrio, Guastra and San Quirico, take part in the procession, wearing traditional clothes and carrying flashlights of all sizes. The celebration kicks off at 6 p.m., when the figures enliven the streets of Agnone with their colorful parade, bringing with them the treasures of the land and animals of the countryside. It is a fascinating living picture of local traditions, a portrait that captures the richness of rural Molise life.

The highlight comes with the entry of the bearers of ‘ndocce, the majestic torches of various sizes that transform the streets of the village into a glowing trail of fire. Flickering light creates a magical atmosphere, while fire choreography enriches the parade, providing an extraordinary visual spectacle that enchants spectators.

The beating heart of the ritual is in the square, where the majestic Brotherhood Bonfire is lit. This symbolic gesture, wrapped in the purifying flame, marks the end of what has been and the beginning of new hope. It is a farewell to the shadows of the year drawing to a close, a warm welcome to the radiant future on the horizon. As the fire dances and crackles, a mystical silence envelops the square, replacing the clamor of the parade with an atmosphere of evocative contemplation. It is a time when the community comes together in a moment of reflection, giving space to the thoughts and emotions that the fire ritual has stirred.

The term “‘Ndocciata” derives from ‘ndocce, the handcrafted flashlights made from white spruce logs and bundles of dried broom, held together with skill. These fan-shaped torches, more than three meters high, carried on the shoulders of bearers in traditional shepherds’ hoods, are a true spectacle of craftsmanship. The wood from the Montecastelbarone forest burns beautifully due to its high resin and represents a cosmic tree with deep spiritual value.

It is an experience beyond time, an immersion in the magic of Agnone that is renewed every year with the same intensity and charm.
