Fair on the sheep-track
The San Domenico Fair in Carovilli is held on September 1 in the town of San Domenico, marking the end of summer and a return to the usual daily routine.
The traditional fair, once dedicated to buying and selling animals, now features more classic stalls in a community atmosphere.
The place where the fair is held is of paramount importance: it is located along the tratturello that connects the Castel Di Sangro-Lucera and the Celano-Foggia sheep-tracks, traditional transhumance routes. Here there is still a road cross, a stone with the toll for stopping, and a small church dedicated to St. Dominic, where the priest celebrates Mass on the morning of the fair.
A central element of the fair is the food stand, which offers the opportunity to taste typical dishes and spend pleasant moments in good company.
For Carovillans, playing morra is a must-do tradition: the tournament is long and stretches from the evening until the following morning.
