The celebrations for Our Lady of the Caves in Rocchetta a Volturno.
Three days of religious events organized by the Santa Maria Delle Grotte Feast Committee of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Parish in the municipality of Rocchetta A Volturno (IS), Aug. 21, 22 and 23.
Event now held with a centuries-old tradition in the township in the characteristic church of Santa Maria delle Grotte, which appears as a stone vision of Benedictine theology, built with typical local, porous and crumbly stones.
The three-day festivities are anticipated by a pilgrimage of the Rocchetta A Volturno group to the Shrine of Our Lady of Canneto in the town of Settefrati, and it re-enters the area on the very afternoon of August 21 to kick off the festivities.
During the three-day festival, illuminations are installed around the village and events are organized that include band concerts with a procession, parish choirs during the holy mass in the quaint church, various artists performing during the three evenings, presence of food stands and retail sales.
The August 22 event is very much felt by the Italian community living abroad, so much so that on the same day celebrations for Our Lady of the Caves of Rocchetta A Volturno are also held in Chicago, but every year in honor of this feast many Italian Americans come to Italy to experience the magic of this festival in person.
